In the Naistenlahti area of Tampere, a new carriage maintenance area is being built as part of the Tampere railway station area project.
Excavation work progressed during the summer and autumn of 2025, with a total of approximately 8,000 cubic metres of rock excavated from the site. The dense urban environment and residential buildings located higher up on the slope added further challenges to the work.
A soldier pile wall was constructed to support the soil masses above the rock face during the excavation. We used our remote-controlled drilling rig to drill piles into the bedrock. When constructing the wall, special attention was paid to the vibrations caused by the upcoming blasting work and to ensuring that the piles were anchored deep enough into the rock.
The blasting operations during excavation were carried out using small charge sizes, and the work phases were carefully scheduled according to train traffic and traffic on Ratapihankatu. Safety and environmental impact management were key priorities throughout the entire project.
Overall, the project is an excellent example of how multidisciplinary collaboration and meticulous technical design enable the safe and sustainable construction of rail infrastructure in the heart of a dense urban environment.
The Naistenlahti track works are part of the extensive Tampere railway station area project, implemented through an alliance model in cooperation between Kreate and the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency.
